Kris & Paul

Interview Dark Entries (03/2011)

HELLO, PLEASE TELL US WHO ARE NO TEARS ARE.

No Tears are :

Kristian Dernoncourt : Bass, Voice LYRICS

Paul Fiction : Guitar, Synth & programmation

On stage, the band are completed by two The Names members : Marc Deprez (guitar) and Laurent Loddewijckx (drums)

NO TEARS ARE A FRENCH BAND. HOW IS THE REACTION IN FRANCE TOWARDS YOUR MUSIC?

Paul Fiction : In France, No Tears is often described as a modern successor of the french 80’s cold wave. We don’t deny it, I think in fact, we have this old spirit to explore and experiment music but I also think that today, our music move away from the original cold wave sounds we listened 30 years ago.

I HEARD THAT YOU RECENTLY MOVED TO BRUSSELS, DOES THIS MEAN THAT NO TEARS WILL FOCUS ITSELF MORE ON THE BELGIAN UNDERGROUNDMARKET?

Paul Fiction : Sure, since I live in Brussels, we will be more present in Belgium but we don’t focus just in this country ! We will continue to go everywhere in Europe or in the world where fans want to see us.

KristianD : Hey, I’m still leaving in France (thanks high speed trains)!  We can say that half of the objects we sell is for French people. But that’s true we often play in Belgium now.

IT IS A CLICHÉ TO SAY I KNOW, BUT NO TEARS SOUNDS LIKE A FACTORYBAND.

Paul Fiction : I take that as a compliment ! We love a lot of factory bands like Joy Division/New Order, Section 25,  A Certain Ratio, Durutti Column, The Names !!!

Kristian D : It’s a surprise, for me, because Factory bands have never been my favorite bands. But the way to build and mix our songs, and Paul’s work make maybe this feeling.

AND YET, I HAD THE THOUGHT THAT ON “FRAGMENTS” YOU WERE SEEKING TO NEW HORIZONS. RIGHT THINKING SO?

Paul Fiction : Thanks to think it ! Yes, with “Fragments” we had less limitations than on the previous album because we’ve composed in duet. It was very easy for us to choose what we want and it works well just Kris & me. I would like to go on for the next and I wish to invite some other musicians.

KristianD : On « Fragments », the guy called Rodolphe recorded half of the basses, event if we created the songs. He brought a personnal way of playing bass guitar. And several songs has been built from « guitaristic » ideas, from Paul or I, who are not really guitar players.

YOU MAKE POST-PUNK FOR SUCH A LONG TIME, AND NOW YOU SEE BANDS WHO HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THE GENRES, CLIMBING UP AND MAKING MONEY OUT OF THE 3POST-PUNK”-REVIVAL. DOES THIS MAKES YOU BITTER?

Paul Fiction : No, good for them ! It’s nice to be able to live on his music but it has never been our goal. No Tears live for the music as many other underground bands. It’s a non-pretentious project, nonprofit marketing, just a big passion. I often compare what we do as an art form that is sufficient to itself…We get a lot of fun with people who follow us and come to see us in concert for years. It’s great…and sufficiently motivating to continue…

TALKING ABOUT BITTERNESS, YOU CAN’T SAY THE MUSIC FROM NO TEARS IS THAT UPLIFTING. DO YOU SEE YOURSELF AS A DARK PERSON?

Paul Fiction : Yes and No…Sometimes I’m very dark, sometimes I’m hopeful…

KristianD : The fact is I’ve always been attracted by dark musics and dark feelings too. Already when I was a teenager, listening to hard rock, my prefered songs were loud and slow, performed by Blue Oyster Cult, Motorhead or even Scorpions (listen to « Animal Magnetism » !) And a strange time for me was in the beginning of 80’s, when I was buying at the same time a Scorpions and a Cure or Killing Joke LP ! But I’ve never been a satanist person, and actualy I love life !

AND OF COURSE YOU ARE THE MAN BEHIND STR8LINE RECORDS.

WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO START THE LABEL?

Paul Fiction : I would summarize my primary motivation to start Str8line Records by the motto of your country “Eendracht maakt macht “

Then quickly with the other label members we wanted a coherent and strong identity for our label. It should be focused on the future with only new releases taking a lead on great past records company (4ad, Factory, Fiction, Mute, New Rose, Lively Art, Alea Jacta Est…)

Str8line Records progresses step by step and you can find here today some interesting and talented bands (de Volanges, In Broken English, Object, The Names…) We really get involved in each release and we work hard for that on the most professional manner.

KristianD : And I am the Str8line Postman for the worldwide but Belgium and Nederlands. I have to fly every night, like Santa Claus, to bring records in all near and far Europe, Australia, south and north America, Japan … Oh that’s a good idea of song ! Meeting strange creatures during my journeys. Dead people climbing to the Heaven… or Hell ! Angels falling down on Earth. Nuclear missiles. Space tourists…. You know, postman is a dangerous job !

REGARDING THE CRISIS IN THE RECORDINDUSTRY, FRIENDS WILL TELL YOU THAT YOU’RE MAD RUNNING A LABEL IN 2011.

Paul Fiction : First, we manage our budget very seriously and we optimize each release. We work with a lot small/medium specialized distributors, djs, radio, webzines and international magazines who support us.

We want our physical releases to have a very good manufacturing/packaging/arty/sound quality. Not just a basic product. We love beautiful objects and the pleasure to buy a collector. We  also have a very good contract with a big digital distributor who diffuse and promote us very quickly in the world trough all the first populars audio portals (we are one of the first independent label who signed with them).

Further, it was inconceivable for us (foremost musicians) to leave to the major companies the only choice of music and to let die an alternative movement.

WHAT’S THE MOST BEAUTIFUL MEMORY YOU HAVE FROM STR8LINE RECORDS SO FAR?

Paul Fiction : Sincerely, each release is a beautiful memory ! One of the most intense was of course the signing of the legendary ex-factory band The Names and the release of their new album. We have a real relationship/friendship with each band of our label. We are a big family now ! Anyway, this year we will organize our first Str8line Night in Brussels with (I hope) all the bands. Surprises are already planned !

KristianD : And for me, it’s the second « Festival Vision d’une autre industrie » in 2009. Paul organized it with another French small label. Having these 8 bands of whom all Str8line bands and 2 other famous French post-punk bands (Charles de Goal + Frustration) on the same stage was … magical, I think.

I GUESS IT’S A HOBBY THAT TAKES 24 HOURS OF YOUR DAILY ENERGY, NOT?

Paul Fiction : Not 24h but many hours, yes.

KristianD : The official status of our label is a non-profit organization. We are not payed for the work – and it takes a lot of time in our lifes – we do (my postman job !). Or if we are payed, it’s with musics we love, the nice people we meet and support. But that is truth we could not exist if Str8line was a real commercial society.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVE RECORD OF ALL TIME AND PLEASE STATE WHY

Paul Fiction : “Seventeen Seconds” because it’s a more pure album that I listened (and one of the Best album of The Cure)…I love simplicity and powerful of the songs…I love silences, atmosphere, minimalism of the music and feelings given by the lyrics…

KristianD : This question is terrible. I would have prefered the question » Which record would you bring with you on a desert island ? ». Maybe my first record, because it was my first one : a scotish pipeband ! More seriously, Killing Joke « Revelations ». Because friends talked about punk, and I was not able to put a sound, a music on this punk movement, really ! I was just knowing it was a « new » sound, never heard before… And one day, I’ve heart a Killing Joke song on the radio, and the radio presenter said the word « post or positive punk ». This song was incredible and i talked to myself : « hey guy, this is the new sound you never heart before ». And I decided I was loving punk music…. when punk was already dead ! In fact, I was loving post-punk. Not the same thing !

WITH WHO WOULDN’T YOU MIND TO BE ALONE WITH IN AN ELEVATOR FOR 8 HOURS AND WHAT WOULD YOU DO THEN?

Paul Fiction : With Robert Smith and we will make a video clip !

KristianD : Oh no. With a real girl ! And we would do a video too !

ANY SPECIAL MESSAGE TO OUR READERS?

Paul Fiction : Thanks for all people which will look at us.

KristianD : Wie Bunker baut wirft Bomben.
